Last week my firstborn child, Kaitlyn, was married in an intimate ceremony officiated by my sister. This milestone in our family’s life reminded me how amazing my children are, how close my family is and how incredibly lucky we are to welcome Kait’s husband, Chris, to our wolfpack. We are a family of jokesters.

Missing Kait
Kait and Chris bought a house together. Their wedding is on June 4, 2011. I am so thrilled for her and at the same time, I’m going to miss my little girl, my firstborn child and my friend.
Positively shocking
My daughter Kait is a sick woman. She keeps talking about how she wants to see, taste, smell a tornado up close and personal and I keep crossing myself and begging her to take it back. But she won’t. She has dreams of tornadoes, several times a week apparently, and has become quite obsessed with...
She Said Yes
Welcome to the family, Chris.
All you need is love
This past week has been a tough one for our family. Kevin wrestled at Sections and unlike last year, didn’t qualify for State because his weight class this year was stacked with very talented wrestlers. Also, our wrestling team cooped with another school which bumped us from A to AA. We were competing with larger...
And so she clubbed him with her shoe
Kait comes home for lunch almost every day that she works. Yesterday she walked in the door and without skipping a beat Kevin said, “Hey Waldo. How’s work?” People, this is why I wanted so many children.

Such is the case with Kaitlyn and Nathanael, my eldest and youngest child....
She waited one-fourth of her life for this day
This morning we brought Kait to the University of Minnesota-Duluth, a college which she has been talking about since she was 15 years old. Kait has been attending a local community college since she graduated in 2007 which allowed her to finish many of her general classes at a much lower cost. That time has...
Passage
Dear Kevman, Eighteen years ago today you were born in Room 1625 at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. You weighed 8 lbs., 1 oz and were 19 inches long with dark, inquisitive eyes and the ability to smile when I spoke to you. Throughout my pregnancy I often wondered how I would mother a...
Fo' shizzle my wizzle!
Our kids ride the same bus as the kids from the group home. For the most part, other than learning how to use swear words in context, this has not been a problem. One of the benefits of sharing a bus ride with inner city kids is being up-to-date with one’s gang signs. This morning...
Hot Mike
Testing. Testing. 1, 2, 3. Eeeeeeeeek! Did you hear that high pitch squeal? It is the parenting feedback I receive from my omniscient, nineteen year old daughter who still lives at home and feels compelled to share her child-rearing wisdom with me: “When I have kids, I’m never going to MAKE them attend church.” “Just...
