This morning we explained to the kids that Darren and I are having an “adventure” together tonight. We chose to tell them at the last minute so that no great plans to have their own little adventure (”Party at Kait’s house because their parents are going out of town!”) could be made in our absence.

Kevin, 15, said “Do you guys even know how to party?”

Wow.

I looked at Darren and asked “Do we? Since partying wasn’t invented until after we started this family of ours…do we even know how to party??”

“Maybe we should google the word and try to figure it out” he responded with eyes rolled to the ceiling.

Tonight we are going to meet Jeff and Char from my favorite blog View From The Cloud. How incredibly lucky am I? Jeff’s band, The Receders, is playing at Bubba’s tonight and I’ve not been this excited since the last time we had a date when Bon Jovi played at the Met Center back in 1989.

Oh dear. That was 17 years and six children ago.

What if we have forgotten how to party? Is it still appropriate to flick my bic at a concert? Do people still do the Moonwalk and breakdance because I’d hate to think that the money I spent on Moonwalking lessons went to waste. Will they let me in if I’m not wearing sunglasses at night , Reeboxs and my Swatch watch?

Gosh, what would Pat Benatar do in a situation like this?

It seems to me that when you turn a certain age, have a certain number of children and…well, get this old, you have to fight for your right to party because love is a battlefield and I ran so far away that if I could turn back time I’d see my true colors shining through and realize it’s the end of the world as we know it.
