Reading is Sexy

November 7th, 2007 by Jennine

I, like most parents, encourage my children to read.

Remember the Scholastic Book Club orders the teachers passed out in school? Have you ever had the painful experience of being the only child in class who didn’t get to order anything and then watched in utter jealousy as each child was called to the teacher’s desk to pick up their order on delivery day? I guess I’m Scholastic Book Club sensitive which means that all four children who remain in the elementary school get new reading material every month.

In addition to the books we order from school, each child has their own magazine subscription ranging from Ranger Rick to Scientific American. There’s Cricket, Highlights, The Big Backyard, National Geographic, The Smithsonian, etc… We have an encyclopedia set. We have the entire Little House on the Prairie series. We have Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. We have many old classics right up to Harry Potter.

So given all this effort to provide my children with a wide variety of reading material, how on earth does this end up being my children’s all time favorite periodical???

Yep. I find them crumpled up all over the house like some people find loose change and this is the sole reason I can never, ever invite my Pastor to dinner.

Wow, I didn’t know they came with instructions. See, that’s why men could never use these things… we would never read the instructions.

Oh, and I caught that… period-ical. Clever, very clever.

    good one, Jeff!

I had a friend who’s daughter took out the “Special Napkins” when she set the table for the Pastor when she did invite him over for dinner. Of course, the daughter was probably 6 years old at the time, and Mom didn’t see the setting until the guests arrived to see the table setting - ALL at the same time.

    Can you imagine?

I say, invite your Pastor. It’s not like he’s never seen the instructions before.
